General information on packaging

Old packaging is an important part of the overall municipal waste from our households. Every person produces on average around 100 kg of old packaging per year. Industry produces even more old packaging. Interseroh can provide an effective system for dealing with old packaging on every level.

What is packaging?

Packaging is a product made from a variety of materials that is manufactured to hold, protect, handle, deliver or show goods, which can range from raw materials through to finished products, and which is passed on from the manufacturer to the seller or final consumer.

What is old packaging?

Old packaging is produced when the final consumer removes the packaging from the goods or empties this. A differentiation is made for packaging in terms of its point of production:

  • Old packaging that is municipal waste. This includes sales or group packaging that is produced in households as separated waste as well as similar waste from the retail trade, industry, commerce, the service sector and public sector.
  • Old packaging that is not municipal waste, produced during production, trading or service activities as well as in agriculture, forestry, the fishing and transport industries.

Goals of recycling old packaging

Old packaging is an important source of raw material for the manufacture of new products. Through a responsible handling of old packaging, our goal is…

  • to secure at least 60 % of the overall quantity of old packaging for recycling, including energetic recycling;
  • to recycle at least 55 % and a maximum of 80 % of all old packaging
  • to secure at least the following shares of individual types of packaging materials contained in the old packaging through recycling:
    • 60 % mass content for glass packaging
    • 60 % mass content for paper and cardboard
    • 50 % mass content for metal packaging
    • 22.5 % mass content for plastic packaging (material recycled to plastic)
    • 15 % mass content for wood packaging
